Slice of Life: Where in the world is Haiti?
If you’ve been reading our posts over the past couple of months you will have read about the food, transportation, sights and smells of Haiti. But do you know where Haiti is? I have to admit that I didn’t until a few years ago. I was surprised to learn that Haiti is so close. You can fly to Haiti from Philadelphia in just under 5 hours. That means you could get from here to Haiti before you could get from here to Denver. Haiti is closer to the HCN headquarters than 14 of our western states in the US.
So where exactly is Haiti? It is southeast of Cuba which is just south of Florida. It shares an island with the Dominican Republic. The island’s name is Hispaniola. Haiti is a part of the Caribbean but it doesn’t seem to share the tourist appeal of the rest of the Caribbean or even the other half of the island. Now that I’ve been there a few times I can understand why.
It is hard to imagine that people are living this way so close to America. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty.
This is one of the reasons that we are committed to trying to help by giving students an education. Our students love their country and tell us over and over that they want an education so they can help. They don’t want to abandon their country. They want to learn so they can make a difference in Haiti.
